What Participants Said:

No: A strong majority of ‘yes or no’ respondents, at 90%, opposed passing a law requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets.

  • “We should be responsible for our choices.”
  • “This only affects the safety of the person wearing or not wearing the helmet.”
  • “Adults should be free to choose what risks they want to accept.”

Yes: A minority, at 10% of ‘yes or no’ respondents, were in favor of passing a law requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets.

  • “No one should be allowed to jeopardize their safety like that. Put a helmet on.”
  • “The no helmet law contradicts so many of the reasons for a lot of the safety laws.”

Other: As noted above, 10% of those participating did not give a yes or no response, instead addressing their comments to related questions and issues. These included:

  • Insurance and the potential medical costs for motorcyclists involved in accidents.
  • The inherent dangers associated with driving any motor vehicle: "Every time you start an engine, you are operating a deadly piece of machinery."
