Read more about this issue. On April 25, the LFDA decided to put the issue to its Facebook members, posting the question, “Should NH legalize the sale of firecrackers?”

“Should NH legalize the sale of firecrackers?”

Results: Yes or No Respondents

Firecrackers NH Citizen Voices Chart

Participation: 418 participants gave 901 responses

A total of 88% of those participating gave a 'yes or no' response to the question. The remaining 12% of participants engaged in the discussion but did not give a yes or no response. In total, the LFDA received 901 responses from 418 individuals. (Click here for details on our methodology.)

What Participants Said:

Yes: A strong majority of ‘yes or no’ respondents, at 93%, supported legalizing the sale of firecrackers.

  • “Yes, let people light firecrackers if they want to.”
  • “Why are the illegal? Anyone over 18 can ride a motorcycle without a helmet, but we don't let them have firecrackers?”
  • “If they are used according to the directions, they are safe—just like a car or table saw.”

No: A minority, at 7% of ‘yes or no’ respondents, opposed legalizing the sale of firecrackers.

  • “They hurt dog’s ears and they start fires. They should ban all fireworks.”
  • “No. They cause 90% of fireworks injuries. They made the law for a common sense reason.”
  • “They are a nuisance—not to mention dangerous.”

Other: As noted above, 12% of those participating did not give a yes or no response, instead addressing their comments to related questions and issues. These included:

  • Discussing the role of personal responsibility: “Ever heard of adult supervision?”
  • Debating the risks of firecracker use: “Firecrackers aren’t sticks of dynamite.”
  • Clarifying the history of legislation: “They [have] been illegal a lot more than 10 years…  When I was a little kid my parents would go to Canada to buy them.”
