Mandatory Car Insurance

LFDA Editor

New Hampshire currently does not require motorists to have car insurance.

In the past, the House Transportation Committee has voted against any bill that would require motorists to carry such coverage.

Those in favor of compulsory vehicle insurance argue that mandating insurance is the only way to guarantee that at-fault drivers will be able to pay for damages in a car crash.

Opponents of compulsory automobile insurance argue that forcing residents to buy any product, including car insurance, is a violation of individual liberty.  Insurance companies have also argued that mandatory automobile insurance laws invite excessive regulation of the insurance market, distorting insurance costs.
