The filing period for 2018 candidates closed in June. Voters have a wide array of candidates to choose from in the September 11 primary.

The race for governor

Gov. Chris Sununu doesn’t have a Republican challenger in the primary.

After qualifying for full party status, the Libertarians have two candidates for governor: Aaron Day and Jilletta Jarvis.

There are also two Democrats dueling for a place on the ballot next to Sununu: former state senator Molly Kelly and former Portsmouth mayor Steve Marchand.

Independent John Best also contacted Citizens Count and said he wants to get on the ballot. Independent candidates for governor must collect at least 3,000 signatures by the primary to get on the general election ballot.

The House race in the 1st district

After Rep. Carol Shea-Porter announced her retirement, eleven Democrats filed paperwork to become the Democratic nominee in the 1st congressional district. The candidates include state elected officials, former staffers in D.C., businessmen, and veterans.

There are also six Republicans running in the 1st district, two independents, and one libertarian.

The House race in the 2nd district

Rep. Annie Kuster is running for re-election and the only Democrat in the primary.

Seven Republicans, two libertarians, and two independents have filed paperwork to try and challenge her in November.

Meanwhile over 900 candidates have filed for state representative, state senator, and executive councilor. This summer Citizens Count is researching and surveying every one of those candidates, and we will publish profiles later this summer on our website and the Citizens Count NH Voter Guide app.
