Last week, the House Education Committee voted against a bill that would have increased the standards for charter school teachers.

HB 1120 would require all charter school teachers to have a "valid New Hampshire teaching credential."

Current law states that only 50% of a charter school's teachers must be certified or have three years teaching experience.

The bill is scheduled for a vote from the full House in March.

The New Hampshire chapter of the National Education Associate (NEA-NH) supports the bill.

“NEA-NH believes that all New Hampshire students have the right to be taught by qualified, credentialed teachers,” says their website.

Most states that allow charter schools also have stricter requirements for teachers.

On the other hand, opponents of HB 1120 argue that certification does not guarantee a teacher's quality.  Regardless, charter school teachers must follow state curriculum guidelines, and any shortcomings in education are revealed in statewide assessment results. Charter schools must show they are successfully educating students to maintain authorization from the state.
