Credentials for teaching staff?

On Tuesday, March 23, the House defeated HB 1120, a bill which would require all teaching staff of a chartered public school to possess a valid New Hampshire teaching credential.

Currently, state law requires that a minimum of 50 percent of teachers at a chartered public school must have either New Hampshire certification or at least 3 years of teaching experience.

Those against the bill argue that charter schools are meant to allow for more innovative approaches to education, which can include hiring teachers with unconventional backgrounds.

Those for the bill, however, contend requiring certification is important to ensure that those teaching at charter schools are capable of providing a quality education.

There are currently 27 charter schools operating in NH. Nearly all NH charter schools receive their funding directly from the state, at a rate of $5,597 per pupil.
