A peacemaker

Chandler describes himself as a peacemaker, which strikes a contrast to Jasper.

Jasper was elected Speaker in 2014 after organizing a rebellion against the Republican nominee, Rep. Bill O'Brien. After that, O'Brien and his supporters formed an alternative caucus and leadership team for Republican representatives. Jasper ultimately banned the caucus from the Statehouse.

Chandler pledged to allow that caucus back into the Statehouse. He also said he would include a more conservative Republican on his leadership team.

Some conservative Republicans are still dissatisfied with Chandler as a leader, because of his moderate voting record. For example, Chandler supports expanded Medicaid eligibility.

Chandler currently serves as Deputy Speaker of the House. He also served as Speaker from 2001-2004. He said he will not seek another term as Speaker after the 2018 elections.

Other candidates

House Libertarians plan to vote for Rep. Jim McConnell instead of Chandler. Democrats are expected to nominate Rep. Steve Shurtleff.

The full House will elect the Speaker Thursday, November 30. Since Republicans hold a majority of seats, Chandler is expected to win.
