The New Hampshire House voted 297-67 Wednesday to approve House Bill 618, which would decriminalize the possession of up to a half ounce of marijuana or five grams of hashish.

Penalties for a first offense would include a ticket and a fine of up to $100. Criminal penalties for possession of larger amounts were also reduced to a misdemeanor accompanied by up to a year in jail and $2,000 in fines.

The House also passed HB 150, which establishes a committee to further study the legalization of marijuana.

Gov. Hassan has expressed her opposition to any bill decriminalizing marijuana. Nineteen other states have decriminalized marijuana.
