Lawmakers react to Trump’s transgender military ban

Jul 27, 2017

On Wednesday, July 26 President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he is reinstating a ban on transgender citizens serving in the U.S. military.

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

- President Trump

President Barack Obama lifted the ban on transgender citizens serving in the military. The Pentagon is in the midst of a study on how to integrate transgender service members.

Meanwhile there are several thousand transgender citizens already serving in the U.S. military, according to some estimates. So far the White House and the Pentagon have not clarified if those citizens will continue to serve.

Here is how New Hampshire’s elected officials in Washington, D.C. reacted:

“As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I will fight to prevent President Trump’s ugly rhetoric against our troops from becoming reality, and to make sure these troops know that Americans appreciate their service and sacrifice.”

- Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, on her website

“The tweets this morning by President Trump are a disgrace to the thousands of transgender service members who are bravely serving our nation. It’s appalling that the Administration would discriminate against those who serve and plan to serve in the defense of the United States.”

- Rep. Ann McLane Kuster, via Facebook

“Our military is stronger because of the bravery & sacrifice of LGBTQ service members. @POTUS announcement is wrong & makes us less safe.”

- Sen. Maggie Hassan, via Twitter

Shaheen has not released a statement, but expressed disapproval of the move in an interview on MSNBC

Gov. Chris Sununu has also not weighed in.

Republican state Representative Al Baldasaro provided WMUR a quote in favor of the ban:

“The military is for fighting for this country. It’s not a social program.”
