On Tuesday, July 19 the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Department of Environmental Services (DES) will host a public meeting about the investigation into perfluorochemicals (PFCs) in southern New Hampshire’s water supply.

PFCs are manmade chemicals used in nonstick cookware, stain resistant carpeting, and more.  The effects of PFCs on humans are not clear.  Nearly all U.S. residents have some level of PFCs in their blood.  However, some studies show a link between PFCs and thyroid problems, decreased kidney function, and more.

The DES investigation began in March 2016, after a plastics plant in Merrimack reported high levels of PFCs in their water.  Since then, DES has tested for PFCs at wells in Amherst, Bedford, Litchfield, Londonderry, Manchester, Merrimack, and Salem.  Many residents in those communities are eligible to receive bottled water from the state.

DHHS is now offering blood testing to individuals in those communities with elevated PFCs in their water.

The public meeting July 19 will take place at 7:00 pm at the Campbell High School Auditorium.
