A 2015 report card gives New Hampshire the only 'A' in the nation for health care cost transparency.

The report, developed by the Catalyst for Payment Reform and Health Care Incentives Institute, graded New Hampshire on the state website NHHealthCost.org. That site uses claims data from insurance companies to let consumers compare health care providers' prices for various procedures.

Ideally consumers will use the website to choose less expensive health care providers.  The charge for a medical procedure can vary widely from one provider to the next, with no difference in the quality of care.

However, consumers are not used to comparing health care charges.  Patients may choose more expensive health care providers, assuming that the higher cost correlates with higher quality care.  Alternatively, if a patient's insurance plan absorbs cost variations, consumers may have no motivation to change providers.
