NH school district considers cutting vacation

The Conway School Board is considering replacing February and April school vacations with just one week of vacation in March.

Conway is hardly the first district in New Hampshire or the rest of the United States to consider this option. Cutting a week of vacation during the year means students get out earlier for the summer.

That earlier end date is especially appealing in a state with frequent snow days.

Supporters argue that an earlier summer release gives families more time together and keeps kids out of classrooms on hot days.

Opponents argue that students lose knowledge and skills over the summer, and a longer break will only make the problem worse. Some advocate for a longer school year with more frequent, shorter breaks.

February and April vacations have also been a tradition for over a century
