#NHexit campaign calls for the Granite State to secede

Following on the heels of the "Brexit" vote that saw United Kingdom residents call for their nation to leave the European Union, activists in New Hampshire have initiated a NHexit campaign pushing for the state to secede from the U.S.

Supporters of the initiative cite issues with federal policies that lead to high tax rates or infringements on personal privacy. They argue that New Hampshire's diverse economy and strategic geographic location make independence a viable option.

Opponents cite the 1869 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that determined it was illegal for states to leave the union. They also contend that even if the federal government agreed to allow the state to secede peacefully, the move would almost certainly spark a major economic recession and devastate New Hampshire's infrastructure.

The U.S. Constitution does not explicitly address the question of secession.
