On Monday, October 19 - five years after first proposing the project - Eversource filed an application for the Northern Pass with the New Hampshire Site Evaluation Committee (SEC).

The SEC approval process will involve several public hearings and is expected to last over a year.

The Northern Pass is a proposed transmission line from the New Hampshire-Quebec border to Deerfield.   The line will carry electricity from hydropower plants in Canada.

If the SEC approves the project, the Northern Pass could be online by 2019.

According to the project’s website, the Northern Pass “will lower New England’s annual energy costs by more than $850 million, greatly assist in meeting the region’s clean air goals, and add needed diversity to its energy mix.”

The Northern Pass faces opposition from the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, the Conservation Law Foundation, and several grassroots organizations of residents who live along the Northern Pass route.  Those opponents argue that the project will have a significant negative aesthetic impact on New Hampshire’s environment.

In August the Northern Pass announced a plan to bury over fifty miles of transmission lines to address aesthetic concerns.  Opponents maintain that all of the lines should be buried.

When the LFDA asked our Facebook community about the Northern Pass, 86% of commenters opposed the project.  Click here to read the results of that conversation and add your voice!
