Kentucky Senator Rand Paul told attendees at a Milford Town Hall on Wednesday, “I come to NH to announce that I will fight for your right to be left alone.” Paul announced his candidacy for president on April 7.

During his visit to Milford, Paul, a Republican, made clear his opposition to government surveillance and federal interference with state education.

He also recognized the importance of New Hampshire’s support of him early on in his campaign.

“We are going to do everything to win New Hampshire,” he explained during a news conference. “I do think we need to win New Hampshire.”

According to recent polls, Paul trails Jeb Bush and Scott Walker. His father, Ron Paul, sought the presidency as a Libertarian in 1988, then again as a Republican in 2008 and 2012, and was defeated.

In terms of his supporters throughout the country, Paul said, “When you see me polled against Hillary Clinton in purple states and in some blue states, we do better than any other Republican. We believe that is because we attract independent voters more effectively than any other candidate.”

Following his visit to New Hampshire, Paul plans to head to South Carolina and Iowa.
