Current state representative Wayne Burton wants to sponsor a bill banning firearms at polling sites in schools.

According to the state Attorney General, "There are no New Hampshire election laws that prohibit a voter from carrying a firearm into a polling place that is located at a school."

"Here is a situation where protecting kids is going too far, or not far enough, depending on how you look at it. It’s all in the eyes of the beholder," said Burton.

Supporters of a ban argue that guns are inappropriate in schools. They also argue that visible firearms may intimidate some voters in an election that has been particularly antagonistic, and even occasionally violent

Second Amendment supporters argue that voters have a constitutional right to carry firearms to the polls. They also argue that lawful gun owners can protect fellow voters.

Burton must win reelection in Durham and Madbury to sponsor such a bill in the next legislature.
