Should meat have a country of origin label?

Earlier this month, Congress repealed a federal law that required pork, chicken, and beef sold in the United States to be labeled with its country of origin.

In the absence of a federal labeling requirement, some have argued that states should step in to reinstate the standards. Supporters of such a move claim that consumers have a right to know where their food is coming from, and cite health concerns related to meat produced in certain countries.

Opponents counter that requiring country labeling for meat products, particularly on a state-by-state basis, puts an unfair burden on meat processors, and note that all meat imports into the United States must meet strict health and safety guidelines.
