In 2015, 153 bridges were red-listed with the number predicted to rise to 170 in 2021 and nearly 190 in 2026. In addition, some water treatment plants and wastewater facilities in the state are upwards of 100 years old and have also been identified in need of repair.

One estimate is that $3 billion dollars is required to maintain and repair NH's infrastructure in the next 10 to 20 years.

Supporters of more investment in NH's infrastructure argue that years of neglect and underfunding on preservation and maintenance jeopardizes NH's long-term future. Others argue that improved infrastructure, including broadband internet access, could encourage businesses to relocate to NH.

Opponents, however, claim it is not necessary and cite a recent federal transportation bill, which will give NH an extra $20 million annually in the next 5 years to improve its transportation infrastructure. Others contend that any additional investments should be allocated to bolster NH's human services.
