Should NH legally protect the right to acknowledge traditional winter holidays in schools?

In 2013, Texas passed the “Merry Christmas Bill”, a law that states that teachers and students have the right to display winter holiday decorations and exchange holiday greetings. The bill even allows for the display of menorahs, Christmas trees or nativity scenes as long as more than one religion is represented or a secular symbol is included.

There is currently no effort in New Hampshire to protect the right to celebrate winter holidays in schools.

Supporters of the bill argued that it prevents concerns over political correctness or possible litigation from inhibiting the celebration of traditional winter holidays.

Opponents counter that by allowing the display of religious symbols in schools, the bill opens a ‘back door’ to implied school endorsement of a particular faith. Others argue the law is unnecessary.
