Over the weekend Rep. Carol Shea-Porter announced she would not run for reelection to New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District.

Her decision leaves the race wide open for both parties in 2018.  Here are some of the potential candidates.

Democrats

Mindi Messmer - current state representative and environmental consultant

"I’m certainly supportive of progressive causes and was a supporter of Bernie.  It’s important to promote some of the mending of fences in the state and get more progressive representation." - WMUR

Mark Mackenzie - current state representative and former president of the New Hampshire AFL-CIO

"I think I can be someone who would be a strong advocate for the working people of New Hampshire. That’s been my history. I’ve been doing it for a long time." - WMUR

Chris Pappas - current executive councilor and Manchester businessman

"No one can replace Carol, but it is my hope that the next representative of the 1st District will pick up where she leaves off -- fighting to expand economic opportunity and always advocating for the 99 percent." - WMUR

Sources say the following Democrats are also considering a run, although they have not publicly confirmed their interest: former state House Speaker Terie Norelli, state Sen. Donna Soucy, former Portsmouth City Councilor Stefany Shaheen, former Attorney General Joe Foster, and former Assistant to the Secretary of Defense Maura Sullivan.

Republicans

Two Republicans have already declared their intention to run in 2018.

Eddie Edwards - U.S. Navy veteran and former chief of New Hampshire State Division of Liquor Enforcement

"It has become even more apparent to me as I travel across this district that the voters are hungry for something other than just another politician. They yearn for honesty and integrity, and they are begging for results." - Union Leader

Andy Sanborn - current state senator and Bedford businessman

"I made the decision to run for Congress because I wanted to see serious change in Washington and I know that I am still the best candidate to fulfill that vision." - Union Leader

Former New Hampshire GOP Vice Chairman Matt Mayberry may also consider a run, according to insiders.
